  • Lithuanian swimmer Ruta Meilutyte claimed an Olympic gold medal in the 100 metres breaststroke in London on 30 July 2012. The 15-year-old became the first swimmer from her country to win an Olympic medal.[11]

  • On August 23, 1989 more than one million people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands to form one of the longest unbroken human chains in history. It was a peaceful demonstration to draw global attention to popular desire for independence for each of the countries from Soviet Union. This 600 km long human chain is popularly referred to as Baltic Way.[12]
