  • A tree frog, named Frankixalus jerdonii, thought to be extinct for 137 years has been rediscovered in the jungles of north-eastern India by a team of international researchers including Indian scientists. Their finding was described in a paper published in the journal PLOS ONE on 20 January 2016.[10]
  • India on 20 January 2015 reported a 30 percent jump in number of tiger population since 2010 as a result of widespread initiatives to streamline tiger conservation. The number of tigers in India has risen from 1706 in 2010 to 2226 in 2014.[11]

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 11 February 2014 lifted a year-long ban against India, imposed over corruption concerns, after the election of new Indian Olympic Association officials.   • India won their second Cricket World Cup, in front of the home crowd, after twenty-eight years on April 2, 2011. India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the final. Bating first Sri Lanka scored 274 runs and in reply India recaptured the World Cup glory with ten balls to spare.[41]

  • Indian woman Anshu Jamsenpa became the world’s first woman to scale Mount Everest twice in five days on 16 and 21 May 2017.
  • Indian woman Arunima Sinha who lost her leg after she was thrown from a moving train by thieves two years ago became the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest. The 26-year-old, from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, reached the peak on 21 May 2013.

  • India successfully launched its largest rocket to date, a 630-tonne Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (MK III), on 18 December 2014. The unmanned capsule which could send astronauts into space was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR in Sriharikota.
