  • Brazilian scientists have sequenced the genome of the world's oldest continuously surviving cancer, a transmissible genital cancer that affects dogs, first arose in a single dog that lived about 11,000 years ago. The cancer survived after the death of this dog by the transfer of its cancer cells to other dogs during mating. The study was published on 24 January 2014 in the journal Science.[6]

  • Scientists from Brazil, the USA and Chile have unearthed a mass graveyard of fossilized whales in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Their study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B on 26 February 2014, suggests toxins generated by algae blooms most likely poisoned the animals millions of years ago.[10]

  • Scientists from Brazil, China and the United States have linked two rats' brains, imbedded with electrodes in their cortex and connected via Internet, while a rat in a research institute in Natal, Brazil was helping the second rat at a university lab in Durham, North Carolina to get a reward. The research opens up the prospect of linking brains among animals to create an "organic computer" and helping the patients stricken with paralysis or locked-in syndrome.
