  • Ukraine won a Gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics with victory in the Women's Biathlon Relay. They beat Russia, the reigning Olympic champion, which took silver.[7]
  • Ukraine's opposition leaders and President Viktor Yanukovich signed a European Union mediated peace pact on 21 February 2014. The agreement opened a way to end the current political crisis in the country and for an early national election.[8]

  • Ukraine and Slovakia signed a deal on 28 April 2014 that allows the European Union to send gas to Ukraine. Under the deal Slovakia will reinstate a disused pipeline that will be capable of supplying 3 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas a year to Ukraine.[14]

  • Ukrainian online project YanukovychLeaks won a special award at The Bobs 2014, presented in conjunction with the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders. The site presents the work of a group of Ukrainian and other journalists who worked to salvage and report on records which former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his supporters threw into a pool at a huge presidential estate while fleeing the country after the Maidan revolution.[15]

  • Ukraine and Qatar signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) following a session of official talks chaired by HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani and Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on 8 May 2012. The MoUs were signed in the field of education and scientific research, energy sector and between the Chamber of Commerce of the two countries.[16]

  • The last remaining nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine was permanently shut down on 15 December 2000. The closure comes more than 14 years after a reactor at the site exploded in the world's worst civil nuclear catastrophe.[35]

  • Ukraine and Russia on 17 December 2013 signed an agreement aimed at removing trade obstacles between the two countries and boosting economic ties.
