  • Solomon Islands has surpassed the 25,000 international visitor mark for the first time since numbers were first recorded in 1990, according to the figures revealed by the Solomon Islands National Statistics Office (SINSO) on 25 March 2018. A total of 25,709 international visitors travelled to the islands in 2017, a 10.9 per cent increase over the 23,192 recorded for 2016.

  • On 13 June 2013, the World Bank Group Board of Executive Directors endorsed a new Solomon Islands – World Bank Group Country Partnership Strategy, which focuses on strengthening economic resilience and improving service delivery across the country. The Strategy includes a specific focus on enhancing economic opportunities for women and supporting victims of gender-based and domestic violence. The partnership strategy will also support efforts to enhance the regulatory framework, public sector capacity and community benefits in the mining sector; improve the resilience of rural communities to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters; and help provide more reliable, lower-cost electricity from cleaner energy sources.[2]

  • Tetepare Descendants' Association (TDA) from Solomon Islands was honored with the 2012 Equator Prize by the United Nations for creating ‘community conservation agreements’ whereby indigenous landholders are provided with alternative livelihood opportunities in exchange for a commitment to the sustainable management of marine and forest resources.[3]
