  • The origin and history of modern lions have been revealed by a team of international scientists, including researchers from Qatar. A genetic analysis of living lions and museum specimens confirms modern lions' most recent common ancestor lived around 124,000 years ago, according to their study published on 2 April 2014 in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology.[10]

  • Qatar and Ukraine signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) following a session of official talks chaired by HE the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al-Thani and Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov on 8 May 2012. The MoUs were signed in the field of education and scientific research, energy sector and between the Chamber of Commerce of the two countries.[13]

This is the first time that Qatar sending their female competitors to participate in the Olympic Games.[20]

  • Qatar passed a new law on 19 August 2015 that allows organ donation for transplant by people who are not related to recipients. The only condition the legislation specifies for such donations is that the transplant must be urgent and without which the recipient cannot be treated or his life cannot be saved.

Samba Abderrahman, Abbas Muhamed, Mohamed and Hassan Abdullah crossed the finish line at 3:00:56, besting the previous record of 3:00:76 set by Japan in 1996 in Atlanta, the US.[25]

  • Qatar and Moldova on 4 September 2013 signed an air transport agreement in Doha. According to the agreement, sky will be open for the national carriers of the two countries to operate a number of passenger and cargo flights between them.[27]

  • Qatari research centre Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) unveiled an innovative low-emission, and lower fuel consumption of 20% hybrid car-concept on 28 November 2012. Designed and developed in Qatar, the engine captures thermal waste energy that is utilized to generate electric energy to run hydrogen fuel cells using the potable water as a source for the gas.[34]
