  • Former Attorney General of the Republic of Maldives and a former parliamentarian, Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, assumed office as the Secretary-General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), an organization of South Asian nations, on March 1, 2011. Saeed became the tenth and the first woman to occupy this prestigious position.[1]

  • The President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed was awarded the prestigious Champions of the Earth Award by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on April 22, 2010. He was recognized because of his contributions in showcasing to the rest of the world how a transition to climate neutrality can be achieved and how all nations, no matter how big or how small, can contribute.
