  • Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo, a Roman Catholic bishop, and José Manuel Ramos-Horta, former President, of East Timor won the Nobel Peace Prize 1996 for their work towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor during Indonesian control of East Timor. The Norwegian Nobel Committee wanted to honor both of their sustained and self-sacrificing contributions for a small but oppressed nation.[7]
